In School Programs
Camp Fire USA sponsors special self-reliance and community-service classes. These include I'm Safe and Sure, to teach children in kindergarten and first grade about safety at home, school, public places and play. I'm Safe and Sure also teaches kids the importance of saying no to bullies and peer pressure, as well as teaching them how to cooperate and play well together; Count on Me Kids, to teach children in kindergarten through second grade about alcohol and drug prevention; I Can Do It! to teach second and third graders about safety and nutrition; I'm Peer-Proof, to teach fourth through sixth graders how to build friendships and resist negative peer pressure; I'm Taking Care, to teach fifth and sixth graders how to care for younger children; and A Gift of Giving, to teach kindergarten through sixth-grade children to identify community needs and get involved in worthwhile community-service projects.
The Heart of the Hawkeye Council currently has opportunities available to teach the Safe and Sure and the I'm Taking Care classes. Please download the volunteer application and send it in if you are interested in applying.
After School Programs
When you visit one of Camp Fire's licensed school age child care programs you might see kids playing in the gym, doing art projects, playing cards or taking advantage of some quiet time to read or do homework.
If you stay a little longer, and look a little deeper, you'll see the kids learning to have caring relationships with each other and with adults. You'll notice how they are learning to respect themselves and challenge themselves as Camp Fire's staff guide them toward become caring, confident youth and future leaders. Camp Fire's licensed school age child care programs are located in the school where participants are enrolled, creating consistency for the children and eliminating transportation worries for parents. Participation is open to children in kindergarten through sixth grade. We currently operate 2 licensed programs in Prairie City and Pleasantville.
