Camp Hantesa employs counselors from a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience. Because of the unique talents and abilities with which our staff members contribute, Hantesa is an engaging and dynamic work environment. Below is a Job Description which outlines the basic duties and responsibilities of a summer staff member.

CAMP HANTESA COUNSELOR JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the supervision and programming for day and resident campers in an outdoor environment.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Hantesa Leadership Team

TRAINING NEEDS: Must attend Pre-Camp Training. Must attend all Staff Meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to work well with children.

Interest and experience with outdoor activities.

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

1. The Hantesa Camp Staff is at all times responsible for the supervision and safety of their campers. You must know where campers are at all times, and be responsible for their safety and well being.

2. Help all campers have a FUN time at Day Camp, while providing them with a well rounded program.

3. Be a positive role model for all campers, watching language used, topics discussed with campers, behavior, attitude and dress.

4. Interpret to campers all Camp Hantesa rules, and see they are followed and respected.

5. Assist campers in adjusting to each other and in planning their camp program with camper input.

6. Ensure that First Aid is given to all campers in need. Report all accidents or problems to the Hantesa Leadership Team.

7. Work cooperatively with other staff members.

8. Cooperate with parents of campers.

9. Perform all duties as assigned to the best of your ability, and with a positive attitude.

At summer camp, there are a variety of roles which our staff may be asked to fill any given week. Below is a list of such roles/positions. Please indicate which positions you would prefer in the space provided on the application.

General Counselor - Live in a cabin with 6-8 campers, teaching activities to them. You will learn the activities you will teach. Must be 18 years old.

Day Camp/Resident Camp Coordinator - Manage schedules and staff to ensure quality experiences for campers. Must be 21.

Apprentice Director - Train Camp Hantesa's future counselors. Must be 21.

Barn Director - Teach and supervise horseback riding programs. Must be 21.

Horseback Riding Specialist/Counselor- Teach campers to ride and work at the barn. Must be 18.

Waterfront Director - Teach and supervise at the pool. Must be 18.

Maintenance Support Staff - Handy person for the summer - repair, fix and smile. Must be 18.

Cleaning Staff - Keep camp looking great. Must be 18.

Food Service Staff - Cook and/or help in the kitchen. Must be 18.

Bus Driver (Des Moines Based) - Drive campers to and from our Des Moines drop site. Not housed at Hantesa, but vital to our success. Must be 21, and have a Certified Drivers License (CDL).
